Which TENS rank 10/10?

Updated: Jan 20, 2019

Occupational, speech, and physical therapists use TENS (brief refresher: that stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) units for various purposes. Some examples of ailments to use a TENS unit include reducing pain for low back pain, pinched nerve, muscle/nerve stimulation, arthritis pain, and chronic pain to just name a few. Whether you're looking for a TENS unit to use as a therapist or recommend to your clients, I hope these reviews are helpful!

Omron ElectroTherapy Max Power Pain Relief Device, PM 3032

-Pros: The Omron device is easy to use as you initially select the area you'll be applying the pads to, thus this would be an ideal safe option for clients who want to use it independently. Also, it come with two pads which are considered to be long lasting and will tolerate approximately 150 uses. If you use them frequently then you may need new pads every three months or so. Personally, I would give the Omron 10/10 because of how easy it is to use which increases safety and it’s long lasting pads.

-Cons: There are reports that the cord isn't very sturdy and wears easily so be careful when using and storing the device. At this time, you aren't able to buy a replacement cord so if the cord breaks you have to buy a whole new unit. If you need replacement pads, they have to be Omron to be compatible, other pads don't have the same effectiveness.

-Price: $48 for the device, which includes two pads. Replacement pads vary between $19 and $24 depending on the site you get them from.

NURSAL TENS Unit

-Pros: The Nursal unit is rechargeable, thus you wont have to keep buying batteries to keep it going. The battery can reportedly withstand 10 hours of use. You can use this light weighted unit efficiently on any area because it comes with 8 pads of varying shapes and sizes. There are 20 varying levels of strength, which makes it easy to find the perfect level of stimulation.

-Cons: There have been issues in the past with being able to see all of the different modes effectively, which when providing electrical stimulation is pretty important! Using the device is not intuitive, it can be confusing at times especially if you're new to TENS units. This has been described as more of a massage feeling versus stimulation, if you're trying to conduct nerve stimulation (for instance with a CVA patient) it may not be sufficient.

-Price: $47

TechCare Tens Unit Plus 24

-Pros: The TechCare unit also contains a rechargeable battery. Four pads come with the unit, which is ideal to target both large and small areas. TENS units work most efficiently when pads are placed in ideal spots, this unit comes with pictures to demonstrate correct placement. This is very helpful to demonstrate to clients where you're going to place the pads or where they should if they're choosing to use it independently. The pads work very well and you can use for multiple uses, just don't forget to store them properly!

-Cons: The touchscreen may be a bit finicky and the unit is fragile if dropped; there have been reports of the screen breaking or not working if being dropped. The instructions aren't very clear and it may be difficult to differentiate between the various modes/settings to find the best fit. The settings are more similar to massage therapies. It does not have the ability to do constant/continuous pulse stimulation.

-Price: $39 for the unit.
